BowelCancerUKBowel Cancer UK is a charitable organisation dedicated to saving lives. The charity aims to achieve this by lobbying for patient rights, raising awareness of the disease and it’s symptoms, and encouraging all whom are eligible to engage with the national bowel screening programme.

A large part of our work is to engage the general public who may not be aware of bowel cancer prevention, symptoms or indeed screening that may be available to them. As bowel cancer is the second biggest cause of cancer deaths in the UK, yet is highly treatable when diagnosed in the early stages, it is extremely important to increasing awareness.

Our talks are delivered by a trained, local volunteer with personal experience of bowel cancer. They provide a wealth of information on the symptoms, risk factors, prevention and screening. The personal experience gives our presentations an individuality which engages the audience, and allows the opportunity for attendees to ask questions which they may not ask their friends, family, or event their doctor.

We have organised talks for hundreds of community groups across Scotland including Rotary, Probus, and SWRI. Presentations last approximately 30 minutes, with time allowed afterwards for questions and a short evaluation.

This is a free service. Depending on distance travelled, a contribution towards travel expenses is appreciated, but not essential. We have volunteers in Edinburgh, Glasgow, North Ayrshire, Dundee, and Clackmannanshire. Volunteers are willing to travel.

My name is Catherine Little, I am the Fundraising Manager at Calvert Trust Kielder, and I would welcome the chance to speak to you about the work that we do.

For 30 years we have been delivering exciting, challenging and enjoyable outdoor activity adventure holidays to people of all ages and abilities. Each year we help thousands of disabled adults and children take part in activities they may otherwise not have had the opportunity to enjoy. Many of our visitors have never even had a holiday before. To do this, and to take part in activities which enable them to achieve their potential, is an invaluable experience, often a truly life-changing one, and each visit provides the opportunity to try something new in a safe and caring environment. By focusing on challenging disability through outdoor adventure, a visit to Calvert Trust Kielder is not just about fun, it’s about developing personal skills that can be taken into everyday life.

midland-mencapMidland Mencap is a person centred charity providing a range of choice based care and support services for people with a learning disability and their family carers. Despite financial pressures we have continued to provide excellent person centred services to individuals and families. We have seen a significant increase in demand on these services and this places extra pressure on scarce resources and our excellent staff teams to deliver the outcomes people want.

We remain determined to continue providing advice, guidance and support and facilitating social, leisure, sport, educational and recreational activities for children and adults with a learning disability. However, in order to do this we need the help of volunteers. This could be for as little time as once a month or on a more regular weekly basis. We work city wide and carry out activities in various locations across Birmingham.

We would be more than willing to come out and talk to anyone who might be interested in volunteering or answer any questions you may have.

If you feel you can help or have any questions please contact Midland Mencap and ask for the Volunteering Team:

cancer-research-uk-logoSouth West Wales

Since 1979 we have been lucky enough to have been supported by a Cancer Research UK local committee in Swansea who would organise a handful of fundraising events each year and generally represent the charity within the area.

Unfortunately, after 15 years of voluntary service, the sole remaining member of that committee has been forced to retire due to ill health. This has left a substantial funding gap in the amount that is raised to beat cancer in the Swansea area.

I am appealing to any members of Tangent who, in parallel to their contribution your wonderful organisation, might also be able to give a small amount of their time to help us beat cancer sooner and establish a new local committee in Swansea. Our ambition is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured and it’s my job to work with exceptional people in the community who feel as strongly about this as we do. I’m happy to have a chat and there’s absolutely no pressure to sign up to anything! If you would prefer I am happy to come out to meet any interested members.

brian-clewsHello: my name is Brian Clews and I am a naturalist living in Berkshire and involved in the publishing of natural history books. Outside of that activity, I have been giving talks on natural history topics to social groups for over 25 years. I am keen to see more and more people taking an active interest in our great British wildlife and hope that the talks achieve that. Titles such as Birds in Our County, Red Kites in the Chilterns, Garden Birds, Britain’s Butterflies, and A Walk on the Wild Side, are amongst an overall list of some 12 PowerPoint presentations.
Talks can be between 45mins to 1 hour or more as requested and I provide all my own equipment.

I charge £50 plus 40p per mile travel.

I cover Berkshire, south Bucks and areas within approximately 20 miles of Maidenhead.

prostate-cancer-ukProstate Cancer kills 10000 men PA –sometimes without symptoms until too late. 1 per hour every 12 months. 40000 men are diagnosed yearly. Like most cancers, if caught early it is usually cured But men are notoriously bad at medical things – particularly anything below the belt Women are so much better. Men go to the doctors 4 times fewer then women Women can spot changes in their man, know the danger zones and “persuade their men” to take action and have simple checks And to be there to support if needed The cancer may only effect men physically but like all cancers it effects the whole family emotionally and financially Something for the man in your life – to safe his life?

Talks around the South East and around London. There is no charge but donations are always welcome
